Adoptions & Procedures

So, you’ve decided to add to your family.  Maybe you want a dog that will be great with kids, a good hunting/camping companion, an old faithful to walk on the tundra with!  Whatever your reasons, you’ve come to the right place.  Thanks so much for thinking of us and the homeless, abandoned and neglected animals our volunteers so lovingly care for!
To view the animals up for adoption at the shelter please call us at 979-3651 or email adoptions[at]iqaluithumanesociety[dot]com to make an appointment to schedule a viewing.  (This will allow us to schedule visitations around shifts)

Once you’ve picked out the perfect match for your family, the next step is to fill out an adoption application.  You can download it, print it and drop it off at the shelter; or you can fill it in online and submit it.  Once we receive your application, it goes to a committee for review.  If any of the committee members have questions about your application, we will contact you for clarification.  This process may take up to 48 hours from the time the committee receives your application.

Once you are approved, we will notify you.  The next step would be for you to go to the City Hall and get a dog tag, then contact us (I can link this back to the contact page that has out phone number and contact emails) once you have the tag.  A representative from the Humane Society will meet you at the shelter (bring the tag) so you can pick up your new addition to your family.  Please bring a collar and leash when you come to pick him/her up.

We take payment at the time of pick up.  There is a $50 adoption fee plus we ask for the spay/neuter fee up front.  You can pay by cheque, or money order made out to the Iqaluit Humane Society or you can also pay by cash.

When the Rotary vet comes to town in the Fall/Spring, we will make an appointment for you and let you know the date/time.  There will be no cost to you for the spay operation as you will have already paid the Humane Society and we pay the vet on your behalf.  If you want to get vaccinations, or anything else done during the vet visit, it will be at your own expense.

It’s that easy!
